My assessment task 1 was about antenatal and postnatal depression in women. So the related topics could be signs and symptoms of postnatal depression, pregnancy and alcohol, healthy pregnancy.

Most effective health education programs will utilise public health education resources, tools and materials to promote positive health and well being interactions and outcomes to the public at large in the Primary Health Care (PHC) community context. These materials are designed to complement and integrate with other PHC program activities – rather than a ‘stand-alone’ activity/resource. However, in the context of this assessment task, we are looking at it as a specific activity to assess.
For this assessment – you need to create a public health education resource. Common examples of this are leaflets, pamphlets, posters, and short videos. Often these are ‘physical’ resources – such as those you might see in the waiting room of a GPs/community clinic – but you will be submitting for this assessment as a drop-box downloadable document i.e., pdf file. If you are considering other types of resources – it is advised that you seek further feedback as to if it would be appropriate – either via the appropriate MyLO forums and/or the generic unit email.
This activity allows you to be creative within an academic context. It is advised that you look for ‘balance’ within this task. For instance, material that is too academic i.e., lots of facts and stats and citations are unlikely to appeal to the ‘lay PHC public’ that this resource is targeted at. On the other hand, ‘glamour and glitz’ can get in the way of the important health-related information to convey.

The main consideration for this assessment is that it is ‘appropriate’ to the targeted audience. In this case, the target audience is the ‘general PHC lay public’ related to the community population that your specific topic addresses. The Module 2 content highlights the main types of considerations for this audience – especially in terms of health literacy considerations – such as cultural (CALD/Indigenous) and educational
(age/readability) issues.
The ‘evidence-base’, for this assessment, is in the form of literature/website resources that you will include in your material in the form of reference to and links to supporting material – both as ‘additional’ material and as material that supports the identified topic/need. These resources will need to be quality-checked by yourselves as appropriate and legitimate.

An important consideration with this assessment is the word-count ‘equivalence’ of 1000 words. This equivalence relates to the quality and effort that is applied – equivalent to if it was a 1000 word ‘essay’ assignment. This is not an essay assessment. It does not mean including 1000 words within the resource. ‘Over- crowded’ public health education resources with lots of written material within them is not encouraged and is not seen as good practice – even though you may well come across them yourselves.
