Module Title:Computer Aided Analysis (BEng Tech)
Module Code: MMD3040-N
Assessment 1 – Stress Analysis of a Flat Plate
Linear Analysis This assessment covers learning outcomes 1, 3, 5, and 7 for this module and the standard University assessment criteria for this level apply.
MMD3040-N Computer Aided Analysis Assignment-Management Development Institute of Singapore.
A triangular plate with a 35 mm diameter hole and 3 fillets of R 30 mm is fully constrained at one end and subjected to bearing load of 8.5 k N inside the hole with the coverage area of 180 o as shown in Figure 1. The material properties are listed as below:
Modulus of Elasticity = 220 G N/m 2
Poisson’s Ratio = 0.35
Yield Strength = 240MPa
The flat plat has been designed with a thickness of 40 mm. You need to perform 3-D Finite Element Analysis to determine a thickness of plate of the same length, width and material, capable of withstanding the same bearing load with the factor of safety of four, i.e. the maximum V on Mises elemental stress should not exceed 60 MN/m 2.Your final thickness must be an integer millimetre value to use standard size material.
MMD3040-N Computer Aided Analysis Assignment-Management Development Institute of Singapore.
Justify your final thickness by undertaking a number of Finite Element Analyses on the final design using the Siemens NX software, using a range of element sizes, to show convergence of the maximum stress/displacement (to a value below the maximum allowed) to verify that your new thickness is correct. Note the processing times, so that you can investigate the relationship between element size, results obtained, and processing times.
Produce a report on your work of 3000 words, which includes:
1.Coverage of theories on finite element methods
2.Explanation of the procedures on how the Finite Element Analysis is carried out through NX
3.Generate the results through NX software and graph with detail discussions
4.Conclusions of the results
5.Briefly explain what you have learnt on each tutorial and exercise
You are required to submit your soft copy report through blackboard. In addition, all of your simulation works stored in a CD/DVD (include report) is to be handed in to by Friday 5th February 2021 by 4:00 pm.
