LPM114 Concepts And Strategies For Social Data Analysis Assessment – Australia

Module Learning Outcomes :-
At a fundamental level this module lays the groundwork for answering the question What can we learn about political systems and political processes from empirical observations?’’ In doing so the relationship between theory and data (ie ‘’the real world’’) is explicated. It does so via quantitative political methodo logy the application of statistical methods and reasoning to problems in political science. The primary goals of the course are two-fold firstly to provide a conceptual and rigorous introduction to statistical inference and reasoning about uncertainty (that is: how should we as social scientists think about estimating quantities of substantive interest based on limited information?’’) and secondly to provide mathematical and statistical preparation for further courses in quantitative methods. By the end of the course you will be in position to 1) critically read and evaluate findings and conclusions based on analysis of data and; 2) apply a variety of statistical methods and research designs in your own research.

2. Apply specific research methods to given research tasks
3. Use to an appropriate extent, research methods pertaining to humanities disciplines (e.g. history philosophy linguistic analysis)

Module Content Outline (indicative)

Method of Learning and Teaching
LPM114 is taught weekly. One hour will be pre-recorded “asynchronous”. One hour will be “synchronous” (computer lab).

Method of Assessment and Feedback
LPM114 is assessed through one essay (2,000 words) and an assignment on a quantitative work sheet
(750 words) in TP 2. There are two deadlines after Easter:
A. Quantitative worksheet (30%):
B.Essay (70%):

Topic of TP 2 essay:
There are two options for this part of the assessment:

1) You can write an essay based on this question: ‘In your field is quantitative or qualitative methodology favoured? Why and is this appropriate? Refer to at least three pieces of published research to illustrate your answer’.

i.You can pick any field within the social sciences, but the intention is that it should tie into your work in another module.
ii. This gives you an opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of a sub-field in addition to your under standing of methods.
iii. You should outline the dominant approaches to empirical analysis in that field and then explain why you think they are dominant, and whether the key research being conducted is appropriate.
iv. In order to make the analysis more succinct, it is suggested that you pick three articles as examples to illustrate your points. NB: they should not be the same three as in LPM113.

2.Alternatively you can choose and critically assess two articles agreed with the module leader one of which should rely on quantitative analysis (preferably both articles should be based on quantitative methods). You should provide a very short summary of both studies including main research question dependent/key independent variables and main findings. You should then highlight strengths and weaknesses of the analyses presented in the two articles that you selected.

Assignment on a quantitative worksheet: Students will be set a quantitative methods assignment. This will take the form of a worksheet with five questions, to be answered by analysing the database provided in line with the techniques learnt in class (using SPSS), and interpreting the results.
