Why are you doing this assessment?

This assignment asks you to develop a search strategy to find research to address a clinical scenario. This directly links to a learning outcome (SILO 2) for the subject. It is also an important skill for you to develop for your time as a student and for your future career.

The assignment also asks for you to identify key parts of a research article. This directly links to a learning outcome (SILO 1) for the subject. The aim of this part of the assignment is to encourage you to read and understand a research article.The process of understanding the article and the feed back you will receive following completion will assist you to develop your critical appraisal assignment Assignment 3). The same article is used in assignments 2 and 3.

What you need to do:

This assessment consists of two sections

Section 1 is made up of 5 questions (questions 1 to 5). In this first section you will need to create a PICO and search strategy after considering the scenario. As a reminder.

The scenario and questions appear on the next page and can also be found in the Assessment 2 section of the LMS.

Section 2 is made up of 13 questions (questions 6 to 18). In this second section you will need to identify key parts of a research article as directed in the questions.Please only use the research article provided below or in the assessment 2 section of the LMS. The reference of the article is as follows and is also attached in the LMS:

SECTION 1

Consider the following clinic scenario
You are a physiotherapist working in a private clinic A 52-year-old man attends and complains of pain in his knee. The man has visited his GP and has received a confirmed diagnosis of knee osteoarthritis. The diagnosis was reached after assessing clinical symptoms and X-rays.The man is other wise healthy has no
ongoing medical conditions and is not taking any medications. He also has a Body Mass Index that is in the healthy range.

You consider treatment option for your patient. Usually you prescribe physical therapy to reduce pain for people with knee osteoar thritis. How ever you have recently received information about how Tai Chi can be used instead of physical therapy to reduce pain associated with knee osteoarthritis.

Before designing a treatment plan for you patient you decide to search for literature to help you to make decision about the best treatment approach to take

To search for appropriate literature, you need to create a usable search strategy. Use the information in the clinical scenario to create a PICO and usable search string to search for literature in MEDLINE.

For questions 1-4 1 mark will be awarded if the PICO element is appropriate for the clinical scenario

For question 5 a mark will be awarded if the search string is appropriate for the clinical scenario. The string is appropriate if it meets the following requirements

• The search strategy included appropriate keywords with appropriate wild cards and Boolean operators.
• The results of the search includes articles that will address the clinical scenario.
• The search strategy is usable (does not contain more than 100 results)
• The search strategy includes the article that is used in section 2 of this assignment
