Purpose: In a group of 4 students, prepare a persuasive report showing how the management decision should have been made, and once there was a problem how that should have been solved or managed? Identify the key issue and problem that was instrumental to the failure of the company’s strategy.
Why did a smart company with many smart people working in it fail? What were the key decisions that were made and what were the important problems thatwere not considered? Was it physical distance, culture, ignorance of the industry, lack of knowledge with respect to the other company that they were taking over/partnering with, lack of knowledge of the culture/country?
Prepare and deliver a persuasive presentation ofthe key pointsin yourreport. This assignment aims at ensuring that students have familiarised themselves with a general framework of at least one management related topic. Students will be required to apply relevant theoretical concepts with the use of practical examples in most cases in a written research paper and discuss their topic via a live presentation.

Details: 

Written report – worth 30% of your final grade and must be submitted Week. Identify a multinational company which has made bad decisions and was not able to fix the problem.

Identify a management problem that has come from poor decision making by the company. Identify why the company made bad decisions and why it was not able to fix the bad decisions. Think about how culture, personal pride, personal ego, failure to be able to state that you “do not know”, impacts decision making.

Specify research questions which address the management problem/decision. Design a research program.
Carry out the research. Sourcing from ONLY secondary data. Analyse the findings Identify alternatives and make recommendations to improve the performance of the organisation.

The company and the management issue which you chose should be for a multi- national or international company. Identify the management issues that occurred in the expansion.

You must choose from the following companies:
1. Wesfarmers Bunning: expansion into UK and purchase of Homebase.
2. Woolworths Limited: expansion into the UK market through its acquisition of the UK chain, Safeway
3. Qantas Airways: established a joint venture with British Airways for a new low-cost carrier, “RedQ,”
4. National Australia Bank (NAB): expansion into the UK banking sector via the acquisition of Clydesdale Bank in 1987 and later, Yorkshire Bank
5. AMP: expansion into the UK market by acquiring the UK insurance and investment firm Pearl Group in 2000
6. Lend Lease: expansion into the USA market has been a failure as outlined at Lendlease’s Strategy Update on 27 May 2024. The company will sell its 45 unfinished projects to Consigli a USA construction company.
