Assignment overview: The purpose of this assignment is to provide you with an opportunity to apply your learning in authentic contexts by demonstrating your understanding of the learning from this unit within a folio. This folio will demonstrate your professional knowledge and ability to plan and implement literacy across the curriculum. This is a place where you will also critically reflect on and evaluate your professional growth as a teacher, demonstrate your developing ability to meet personal literacy, and to meet any other requirements for professional teaching.

Assignment details:

Over the duration of the unit, you will gather and articulate your understanding of the learning from this unit within a folio. This folio will be a collection of your learning from this unit, demonstrating your professional knowledge and ability to plan and implement literacy across the curriculum. Your final folio will comprise of the following artifacts:

• two lesson plans to demonstrate your understanding of literacy within a curriculum area across two different primary levels
• a rationale for how the lesson plans demonstrate your understanding of literacy across the curriculum

Two lesson plans

Select one subject or curriculum area other than Science (for example – Health and Physical Education, Mathematics, or Humanities and Social Science). Using the template provided, create whole-class lesson plans demonstrating your knowledge of the course material that considers aspects of literacy across the curriculum. You will need to develop two lesson plans:

1. A lesson plan for an upper primary context (Years 5-6) that will enable students to learn an aspect of a specific subject area and the elements of literacy within it (600 words)

2. A lesson plan for a lower primary context (Foundation or Years 1-2) that will enable students to learn a specific subject area and the elements of literacy within it (600 words).

The rationale for lesson plans

Write a rationale (approx. 800 words) discussing how the lesson plans demonstrate your understanding of literacy across the curriculum. Your rationale should include a critical reflection of how you plan to apply your knowledge of the learning using the Australian Curriculum, and associated state curriculum, to enable all children to learn literacy within specific subject areas. Your rationale should additionally be written in the first person and be supported by the literature.
