Purpose : The purpose of this assignment is to enable you to:

• Demonstrate the use of the Standard Method of Measurement as used in the Australian construction industry.
• Measure quantities and estimate unit rates to prepare tenders for common types oflow and medium-rise construction.
• Apply information technology in measurement and estimating.

ASSIGNMENT TASK :
For this task, it is important to appreciate that your role has changed. In Assignment 1, you were operating in the manner of a cost consultant or quantity surveyor representing the client. Your task, simply stated, was to prepare a tender document (BQ), which would be sent to several contractors. These contractors would then use the BQ to prepare their bids in competition with other contractors to win the project. Your task now is to operate in the same manner as a team of estimators working for one of the tendering contractors.

• Topsoil (vegetable soil) excavation
• Bulk excavation (basement excavation)
• Pit excavations for pad footings (PF1 – PF9) and raft footings (RF1 and RF2)
• Trench excavation for strip footings (SF1 and SF2)

B. Concrete works :-
• Pad footings (PF 1-PF 9) and raft footings (RF 1 and RF 2)
• Strip footings (SF 1 and SF 2)
• Columns on Basement 3
• Basement 3 Slab (excluding ramps and stairs)
• Blinding concrete under pad footings (PF 1 – PF 9) and raft footings (RF 1 and RF2)

C. Form works :-
• Pad footings (PF1-PF9) and raft footings (RF1 and RF2)
• Strip footings (SF1 and SF2)
• Columns on Basement 3

D. Reinforcement
• Reinforcement for pad footings (PF1 – PF6)
• Reinforcement for Raft footings (RF1 and RF2)

Please note that you have already prepared an un priced BQ for some of the items (Ground works, concrete works and Form works) in your Assignment 1. You are allowed to integrate your Assignment 1 information when completing this task. However, you should measure reinforcement since the quantities of reinforcement were not determined in Assignment 1. You are required to measure the works and prepare BQ in accordance with the
requirements of the Standard Method of Measurement that are applicable in Australia (i.e based on ANZSMM or ASMM-6).

Please include the following in the Assignment 3 report:
I. Summary of total estimated cost;
II. Priced BQ
a. Enter unit rates for each BQ item and extend the rates to determine the cost for each of the work sections and a total cost for the works.
III. Build-up rates for each item.
a. You are required to compute the build-up rates based on material, plant and labour costs. Note that the aim of this task is to calculate the unit rates, and not look up the rates in Rawlinson’s or some other reference book, you may, however, use Rawlinsons to cross-check your build-up rates.

The assignment will be carried out on a group basis. Each group should consist of a maximum of 4 students. All group members are required to be involved and contribute to the assignment. Group members should communicate with the unit chair if there are any group conflicts that cannot be resolved prior to submission.

FORMAT OF ASSIGNMENT :
Assignment 3 report must be submitted as a single A4 PDF document, which will include your priced BQ, calculations (rate build-ups) and individual reflection.

The task must be completed using a suitable software package (CostX or MS Excel). Prepare all your work in a neat, tidy and professional manner.
