For this assignment, you are to choose a patient with a complex health problem in your ICU. Choose a case with health issues covered in CNA773. To maintain confidentiality, use a pseudonym for the patient and a generic description of your unit/hospital. You need to focus on key scientific concepts of the patient’s condition.

You need to comprehensively define and discuss relevant pathophysiology related to the complex health problem. Furthermore, you need to present the assessment, diagnosis and treatment/interventions undertaken for the patient. Remember to link them to pathophysiology. The argument needs to be scientific and demonstrate the depth and breadth of your reading. You also need to analyse the treatment used for the patient and compare it with the latest evidence /guidelines available.

• in regard to sequencing and paragraph structure please note:

This means you need to consider what evidence underpins the assessment and treatment you are describing. For example, you might find that general textbooks suggest a particular drug is effective as part of a multi modal treatment regimen, but you need to try to dig a bit deeper. Have any studies been conducted on that treatment specifically in the patient group you’re looking at? If there’s a major trial supporting the treatment, then definitely mention it and discuss its findings. Have you consulted relevant clinical guidelines? Have you considered whether there are any gaps, limitations or controversies in the literature? Does the treatment have any significant contraindications for the cohort of patients you’re looking at, or are there any safety concerns?

Databases are accessible from the university library website with your student login, also perhaps you may wish to use your hospital library databases.

• if you are not sure how many references are enough a useful ‘rule of thumb’ is that for a typical 2000-word assignment, use 12 to 15 references.
