Case Study: Emilia
Emilia is 32 years old, and she arrived in Australia from Brazil eight years ago to live with her mother.At the time, Emilia spoke limited English and could only get employment with a family-run cleaning business where she is overworked and underpaid. Emilia has a traumatic past, having experienced domestic violence and physical abuse in childhood from her alcoholic mother. Emilia is very unhappy living with her mother, but states to you that she has not been able to afford to live anywhere else.They argue constantly and Emilia frequently has to cope with verbal abuse from her mother, who continues to drink heavily.

Emilia’s English has only improved marginally since she arrived from Brazil and she lacks self- confidence and has not felt able to search for a better job. She has also recently separated from her

boyfriend, who left the relationship taking all the small amount of money Emilia had managed to save.Emilia has been attending English language classes at the Cultural Hub Community Centre where you are employed as a counsellor, and has been referred to you by the language teacher for
counselling as she seems to be struggling to cope with her situation and is very unhappy.

During the interview you notice that Emilia is becoming quite distressed about her situation and having difficulty speaking with you and she hints that her boyfriend may have been abusive to her.

During the interview you take the opportunity to discuss budgeting with Emilia and commence by demonstrated how this done. Emilia responds by saying ‘she prefers to learn by actually doing it herself.’
