Case study: SCCT STAFF SURVEY
You have been a member of the College Morale Committee (CMC) at Southern Cross College of TAFE (SCCT) for the past year. SCCT, through your committee, has recently surveyed staff attitudes and opinions on several critical matters. The two principal objectives of the survey program were to assess SCCT staff morale and culture and seek suggestions for improving the organisational culture.
This survey was conducted by distributing paper copies of the survey form to all staff.Staff were instructed to return their survey forms to Human Resources by the internal mail system. The survey responses were collated manually by the HR staff, and the results collated into an Excel Spreadsheet.
The survey sought staff views about the following matters:

Matters staff are most positive about
1.Staff are most positive about diversity in the workplace, as evidenced by a mean rating of 4.74, the highest across all issues.
2.Staff members are confident about the work they do as part of their departmental team. Three of the top ten positive statements with the highest mean ratings fall within the area of ‘Cooperation among co-workers’.
3. Accountability and customer service skills are valued within departments.
4. In general, staff are proud to be associated with SCCT.
a. There is a lack of confidence among staff in the ability of SCCT management to be sensitive to staff concerns, make decisions, and be objective. Five of the top ten statements with the lowest mean rating concern SCCT management and fall within the area of ‘Vision, mission, values and business principles.
b.Staff are concerned that there is insufficient staff to meet work demands and must spend time beyond normal work hours to complete duties.
c. Staff perceive that current pay is not as good as the pay in other, outside organisations or companies.
d. Staff are not confident that supervisors are chosen and promoted based on their managerial skills.
e. Many staff members do not believe that their answers to this survey will positively impact change.

i. At least three out of five respondents agree that their’ physical working conditions are satisfactory, have adequate equipment, are comfortable about reporting safety concerns and are confident in their department’s action to eliminate unsafe conditions.
ii. 65 % of staff agree that job stress is manageable and that there are a reasonable amount of guidelines for work performed.
iii. 57 % disagree that there is sufficient staff to meet current work demands.
iv. 46 % agree that significant time beyond their scheduled work week is needed to complete their jobs
Cooperation among co-workers
1. More than one-half of staff members agree that cooperation is evident in their department.
2. The issues within this topic area with relatively lower mean ratings relate to the distribution of work among co-workers, team training and recognition.
1. Staff members are positive about diversity and how their department, and SCCT in general, deals with diversity at the college.
2. 57 % disagree that they have personally experienced discrimination on campus.
3. 42 % have observed discrimination in the college.
1.Staff have a reasonable opinion of supervisors related to accountability,cooperation, openness, leadership, and communication.
2. Staff members are less confident about their supervisor’s ability to handle conflict well.
3. 69 % of staff members disagree that their supervisor uses intimidation tactics to motivate behaviour.
4. 63 % are not afraid of bringing issues to the attention of their supervisor.
5. 47 % disagree that supervisors are chosen and promoted at SCCT based on their managerial skills.
1. Approximately eight out of ten staff members agree that their job challenges them to do the best for customers and that customer service skills are valued in their department.
2. 66 % indicate that their department gives them the resources they need to provide good customer service.
Performance appraisal :
1.87 % of staff have a clear understanding of job responsibilities, resulting in the highest mean across all ‘Performance appraisal’ issues.
2. 76 % indicate that they have adequate opportunity to use their abilities on the job.
3. Although 52 % indicate that they receive written performance evaluations once a year or more often, approximately one out of five staff members ‘strongly disagree’ that this is the case.
4. Staff members indicate that their performance evaluations are based less on length of time in their department and on relationships with supervisors and more on relevant factors such as teamwork, customer service and initiative.
5. About one-third of staff members believe that their supervisor shows favouritism to some employees
Training and development :
1. 86 % of staff members are comfortable working with tools and equipment in their departments. 73 % agree that their job makes good use of their skills and abilities.
2. One-half or more agree that they have received the training needed to perform their job well,under stand possible career paths, and that support and training are available to update or increase their job-related skills and abilities.
3. Staff members are secure about their jobs and skills.
Vision, mission, values, and business principles
1.Two out of three staff members believe that SCCT management does not care about the workload of staff.
2. Staff question the ability of SCCT management to be sensitive to staff concerns,make appropriate decisions and be open to suggestions and opinions.
3. 47 % of staff members believe that SCCT management does provide a clear sense of direction for the campus.
4. Staff members are confident in the decisions, judgements, and long-term Vision of department management
1. Some 45 % of staff members do not believe that their answers to this survey will positively impact change on campus.
