Where diagrams are required they should be hand drawn as neat and readable as possible. Please scan and upload onto turn it in.
Light
1.Explain how you would decide what light levels are required on a work surface for a particular workplace. Give four examples of different visual tasks and state the range of illuminance that is acceptable for that task.
2.Describe and explain four methods that can be adopted to reduce day lighting glare in interior spaces of a residential building. Use diagrams to help explain.
3.Describe and explain with annotated diagrams four building components either as part of the original constructed design or as add on features that can be adopted / used to increase the amount of usable daylight in a large floor plate of a building.
4.In regards to the use of the Lumen method explain how a designer may decide and measure how much artificial light is required in a room where there is also a window providing natural light and the room is only used during the daytime).
Heat
5. Explain with annotated diagrams, the different effects of insulation and thermal mass on the heat flow through the external wall of a building. In which kind of climate do you recommend using thermal mass and why?
6.Explain the term Thermal Comfort. Describe four of the environmental and/or human related characteristics that can have an impact on thermal comfort of building occupants.
7.Do a quick calculation of the thermal conductance (U value) across a cavity wall consisting of:
1.Outer skin 220 mm brickwork (North facing, exposed aspect)
2.20mm cavity
3.Inner skin of 10 mm plasterboard
The necessary data can be found in module 5. Compare this with the worked example of an insulated brick veneer wall in the worked example. Show your working.

8.Explain the use of a psychrometric chart? Who, in terms of the construction sector workforce may use this chart? (hint: use the axis on the chart as guidance in your answer).
Sound
9.Explain using annotated diagrams, how structure-borne sound can be reduced in multi-story apartment buildings.
10.You are asked to specify the sound attenuation requirements for a separating wall (AKA party wall) in a building that contains a restaurant kitchen adjacent to a private apartment. What factors are most important and what defects would you be looking for when you inspect the completed wall?
