Question 3
Q.3.1 Ayanda is a Bachelor of Education student who is observing learners in a Grade 1 classroom for her teaching practical. During her observations, Ayanda noticed the following behaviours in some of the children in the classroom:
- Siyanda came to school wearing his new glasses. Some of the other kids teased him. Ayanda saw that Sipho, the class clown, was also going to join in with the teasing, however Sipho stopped when he saw Siyanda looked sad. Ayanda asked Sipho why he was so quiet for the first time and Sipho explained that he was thinking about how Siyanda must be feeling with so many kids teasing him, and so he could not add to it.
- Thabo was trying his best. Thabo used to have many tantrums and fights with the other boys. However, during a recent occasion on the playground, Thabo was kicked by another boy during soccer. Thabo told Ayanda that he wanted to hit the other boy but because he did not want to be in trouble again, he walked away.
- Samantha is always in trouble. Samantha never waits for her turn and has many tantrums. She leaves the classroom at any time for the toilet, pulls out her lunch and eats in class rather than waits for the lunch bell, and she cries if she must wait to use any of the activities, such as puzzles.
Analyse the above scenarios and answer the following questions. Remember to refer to academic sources in your answers.
Q.3.1.1 Outline and provide an explanation of Freud’s Psychodynamic perspective.
Q.3.1.2 Discuss the THREE structural concepts of the mind, according to Freud.
Q.3.1.3 Explain how Ayanda can use the Psychodynamic perspective to understand EACH of the learner’s (Siyanda, Thabo, and Samantha) behaviours described above.
