This assessment is designed to build your capacity as University students Students will develop an annotated bibliography and critical analysis with the aims of learning how to find sources correctly reference different types of sources interpret sources and connect a current issue with academic theories concepts To achieve this students will need to identify a current controversial issue research different types of sources that explore the issue and apply one of the concepts theories learnt in the unit to the issue.The assessment task will assist with building key academic skills while also introducing students to the various support tools and resources available at Deakin.

A template that can be used for this task is located in the Assessment 1 folder.
Assessment building exercises’ are provided in the weekly folders (weeks 2 to 5) on the cloud site to assist students to develop this assessment task. The topics of these exercises will be explored in seminars but the exercises will need to be completed independently.

Instructions:
To begin students will need to identify a current topic to use for the assessment. To do this find a news media article or social media post about a controversial issue that was published any time since the beginning of the current trimester including orientation week. At the start of your assessment include:
• The full bibliographic details for the news media article or social media post in Harvard style;and
• Two to three sentences that explain the controversial issue underlying the article/post.
The rest of the assessment should then be divided into two parts (use subheadings).
Part 1 – Annotated Bibliography
The purpose of this section is to research i.e. investigate your selected issue by finding and explaining different types of sources relevant to it. To do this, follow these steps:
1.Find four (4) different types of sources from the below list that relate to the controversial issue under pinning your selected article / post. One source must be an academic text.
• Academic journal article or book chapter (required)
• News article
• Social media post
• Audio or audio-visual text (e.g. tv program, podcast, YouTube,film/documentary)
• Government publication
• Organisational publication
Note :
while the news article or social media post you select to find your topic will have a recent publication date these sources can and most likely will be from before that date.They should relate to the issue under pinning your initial article/post, rather than to the article/post itself.
2. Include the full bibliographic details equivalent to approximately 50 words each some will be shorter in length for each source using the Harvard referencing style.
Note: there are slight variations in the format for each type of source make sure you use the right format for your different sources! Sources should be listed in alphabetical order.
3.Under the bibliographic details for each source write a 150-word summary explaining its content findings and or arguments any limitations present and why it is relevant to the issue and a useful source to consider.
Part 2 – Critical Analysis (400 words +/- 10%)
This section has a dual purpose: to identify how academic concepts and theories are useful in under standing and interrogating mediatised issues and to develop critical thinking skills. In 400-words:
Explain how one (1) academic theory / concept from the Unit relates to the issue explored in your annotated sources.
Theories/concepts that can be used include (but are not limited to): public sphere media effects agenda
setting; framing media plurality ideology network society and surveillance society.
The academic theory/concept you choose will depend on your issue and sources, but it must come from
the weeks 1 to 5 unit material.
In your analysis make sure you define and explain the academic theory/concept (using an academic source as a reference) and refer to at least two of your sources from your annotated bibliography include
in-text citations as evidence/examples to support yourideas.
There are two ways to approach applying a theory/concept in this section – you can either:
- use a theory/concept to break down and analyse how the issue is presented by differentsources; or
- use your different sources as evidence towards ideas involved in the theory/concept.
Common approaches include thinking about how the sources from Part 1 contribute to public debate public sphere how their content is shaped or by whom framing / agenda setting), whether the texts seek to promote particular perspectives on the issue ideology and how the issue is represented in different media spaces network society / media plurality.
Note:
this is not an essay – it does not require an introduction or conclusion, just a discussion that applies the concept/theory to the issue. It does, however, need to be persuasive – i.e. you must create an argument.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the news media article / social media post about a controversial issue need to be from an Australian source?
No – you can pick an online article/post from anywhere. However, you must use one that has been written in English so the markers can read it. The same applies to your selection of sources for the annotated summaries.
Can I use a different academic theory/concept from the list given in the instructions for my critical analysis?
Yes as long as it is a theory/concept that is covered in weeks 1 to 5 of the unit material – please confirm your theory/concept with your tutor before commencing your work if you are unsure whether your choice
is suitable.
What is an academic source?
Academic or scholarly sources are peer reviewed journal articles, book chapters or books This means the work has been judged by experts in the field before it is published. The ‘Finding Sources document in the general assessment folder on the unit’s cloud site provides advice on how to locate academic and other sources. Some easy ways to identify whether a source is an academic text include checking to see if the author(s) has a university affiliation and whether the text has a reference list.
Can I use journal articles from the weekly topic content as references in my critical analysis?
Yes absolutely! Draw from the readings to develop and support your ideas – additional recommended sources that may be useful are also provided in the unit’s reading list.

How strict is the word count?
And are references included in the word count?
Part 1 annotated bibliography :
800 words equivalent. Each of your four annotated entries needs to be approximately 150 words – this may vary a little depending on the specific source you are summarising but it should be in the range of 130 to 180 words. The referencing details provided above these entries are included in the word count for this section as we are assessing how well students have applied the Harvard referencing style to different types of sources. This means that there is some flexibility with the over all word count for Part 1 which is indicated by the word equivalent in the instructions – that is your final word count will depend on the length of the bibliographical details that you need to provide for your sources (e.g. some sources may have longer titles than others which will influence the word count).
Part 2 critical analysis : 400 words. You have a plus or minus 10% leeway with the word count in this section i.e. this section must fall between 360 and 440 words. An important part of academic writing is
learning to articulate your ideas within the limits of the task requirements. Marks will be deducted for
assessments that are out side of the 10% leeway. In-text citations in Part 2 are included in your word count but the reference list at the end of this section is not counted.
